Are we on the open road when we ride?

In the State of Florida, we are recognized as a non-permitted event. SMART Ride does not meet the requirements of a permitted event to close roads and have police involvement. This type of event is cost prohibitive. As a non-permitted event, we do notify all police and municipalities that we travel through the dates of our event so they are aware. Since we are a fully supported ride we provide our own medical, motorcycle crew, ambulance, etc to ensure your Safety. It is important when you train that you train both offroad and onroad in order to be comfortable with traffic. Along the route, there are wide berms and bike paths to utilize, but the reality is you are riding with traffic.

Do I have to attend Safety Orientation on registration day?

Whether you are a first time participant or returning participant everyone must attend Safety Orientation. This attendence is mandatory as YOUR SAFETY during the event is our #1 concern. We want everyone to leave Miami and arrive in Key West without incident! The other practical reason for your attendence is that it is the only way we can obtain liability insurance for the event.

How much do I need to raise?

Each rider is required to raise $1,250. This might seem like a difficult amount, but our average rider raises well over that amount, averaging $1,800. Each crew member (support team) is asked to raise as much as possible, but it is not a requirement. We just ask crew to remember every dollar collected does make a difference to someone needing HIV/AIDS services.

How will I raise the money?

If you have never raised funds before, $1,250 can seem like a scary amount. You will be surprised how individuals respond to you when you tell them what you are doing and that you need their "help" in achieving your goal. The most popular fundraising techniques that our riders use are:

  • Send an Email/letter to family & friends (remember you might have to ask a few times for the procrastinators)
  • Raise funds as part of a team
  • Use used social media like Facebook and Twitter to let your friends know
  • Throw a party, be creative and have fun and people will give
  • Partner with a local business to do a raffle or outreach event
  • See if your company has a corporate match for charity events
  • Work with local benefiting agency for opportunities to raise funds
You just need a plan, enthusiasm, passion and never forgetting why you got involved, always keeping in mind the personal physical challenge, and never forgetting the memory of those who have passed from HIV/AIDS If you have specific questions about how to raise your pledges, you can work with the local agency, send a note to the Director (DavidSpacht@thesmartride.org ) or chat with the rider representative that is assigned to you. How will my funds be dispersed?

100% of what you raise will go to the benefiting agencies:

  • The first 50% of your fundraising will be equally divided amongst all the benefiting agencies
  • The second 50% of your money to be dispersed will be within your control. In other words, if you decide that amongst the agencies benefiting you want the remaining 50% to go to one agency because it is from your area, or it does work you most admire, then you can let us know, and that is how it will be dispersed. If you want the second half of the money to go to one, two, three or even four agencies, that's how it will be divided, you just tell us the percentage as you see fit.

Can we arrive on Day 0 and just ride?

Yes, if you arrive on registration day and have the money raised, you can ride, you will just need to complete the registration process in full and attend a safety orientation. Please plan about 1 1/2 hours to get through registration process.

Why do we need to pay a registration fee, aren't we raising enough money already? Why not take it from money we raise?

Registration money is used to help subsidize the cost of all those items involved in putting together an event. Things like food, transportation, housing insurance, state filing fees, snacks, printing, mailing, signage, advertising, uniforms (alright T-shirts), phones. Not to mention the cost of things like finding sponsors, soliciting for new riders, and tracking all your donations. It is our goal to receive enough sponsorship dollars along with your registration fee to underwrite the entire cost of this event, thereby seeing that all the money you work so hard to raise goes to help those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

-top-

What is the goal?

  • To raise more money than any other similar event has historically done in the State of Florida
  • To provide a SAFE ride
  • Create memories that will fill your heart and soul
  • Include anyone who has ever felt they wanted to challenge themselves and make a difference in the world
  • In some small but significant way feel we changed the lives of others for the better
  • Bring awareness to the continued growth of HIV/AIDS worldwide

How do we get home?

  • Most riders arrange their own transportation home - often with friends or family coming down to support them or with friends on crew who drove down their own vehicles.
  • Many riders will want to share the rental of a van or car to return home - it becomes a very economical way to return.
  • If you're travelling alone, we recommend utilize our facebook page to meet up with other participants prior to the ride to make arrangements for sharing housing and transportation.
  • We are pleased to announce this year that we have formed a relationship with a transportation company to assist in getting riders and crew, and their bikes and gear back to Miami for a small fee (specifically back to Morningstar Renewal Center). Please check out the document - Transportation for SMART Ride 7 - for all the details and to reserve your spot. In particular, note that this option is available ONLY FOR THOSE WHO CAN RETURN SUNDAY MORNING NOVEMBER 21, so you will have to arrange one night's lodging in Key West. Anyone who must return Saturday evening must arrange their own transportation.
